Two cars were swallowed by a chasm filled with hot water that suddenly opened today in Russia.

The Toyota Corolla Spacio and Nissan Juke were stranded in a crater at a crossroads in Novosibirsk, Russia’s third largest city.

The photos showed curious onlookers gazing at the huge sinkhole behind a cordon as utility workers worked to try to free the cars.

“Two cars are completely sunk. One is pretty much afloat, the other is sinking. It’s awful, ”an eyewitness told NGS, a local media outlet.

A Lexus that was waiting at a red light was towed away from danger after coming to a stop at the edge of the precipice “as it was about to fall into the boiling pit,” another report said.

The Toyota and Nissan were said to have been parked outside a business center when the hole opened, and the incident resulted in no serious casualties, local reports said.

Steam was visible at the hole, caused by the bursting of an underground hot water pipe not far from the city’s iconic theater and opera house.

The pipeline provides hot water to keep homes and workplaces warm during the cold Siberian winter.

The incident caused the water supply to 21 apartment blocks and three hospitals to be cut off until tomorrow.

It is the latest in a series of similar accidents in the city.

Cars, buses and trucks were stranded last month after chasms opened in the city’s streets.
