China is expected to host the Winter Olympics in the city of Beijing from February 4 to 20. Some of the games will take place in cities in neighboring Hebei Province.
Beijing was chosen as the host city for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games after beating Almaty by four votes on July 31, 2015 at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur.
The Olympic Games are the biggest sporting celebration in terms of the number of sports on the program, the number of athletes present and the number of people from different nations gathered at the same time, in the same place, in a spirit of friendly competition.
The Olympic Games are held every four years, they include a summer edition and a winter edition.
Meanwhile, the upcoming Winter Olympics have already taken a new turn as the United States has said it will not send a delegation to the games to protest China’s deteriorating human rights.
“The Biden administration will not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games given the [People’s Republic of China’s] the ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang, as well as other human rights violations, ”White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Monday.
The boycott comes ahead of US President Joe Biden’s “Democracy Summit” Thursday and Friday, a virtual gathering of leaders and civil society actors from more than 100 countries.
However, the Chinese Embassy in Washington called the US boycott “political manipulation”.
Chinese Embassy spokesman Liu Pengyu told media that the US boycott position “will do nothing but breed misunderstandings between two nations that must unite to facing the world’s problems ”.
China rejects international criticism and sanctions over the situation in Xinjiang, where the United Nations and human rights groups believe at least one million Uyghurs and members of other predominantly Muslim minorities have been incarcerated.
