Tbilisi condemns Russian State Duma elections in Sokhoumi, Tskhinvali – Civil.ge



The Georgian Foreign Ministry has sentenced today, the holding of elections to the Russian State Duma in occupied Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali / South Ossetia region is “another destructive measure by Moscow which grossly violates basic norms of international law and completely ignores the Charter of the United Nations and the Helsinki Final Act ”.

The Foreign Ministry stressed that the fact that the population of the occupied region of Georgia elects majority deputies in the districts of Voronezh, Leningrad, Samara and Zabaykalsky Krai, as well as political parties in Russia “clearly indicates clear points on the ongoing process of de facto annexation of Abkhazia. and the Tskhinvali region.

He also noted that since the 2000s, the Russian Federation has carried out forced and illegal passports in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region, and has continued the occupation and effective control of these regions, preventing hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons and refugees to return to their homes.

“The holding of elections on the ground, in particular for the composition of the legislature of the occupying state, is illegal and will probably not bring any legal results,” the foreign ministry said.

Nine polling stations were opened for the Russian State Duma elections in occupied Abkhazia and 10 polling stations – in the Tskhinvali / South Ossetia region. The Russian occupation forces, as well as agents of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) were also eligible to vote.

Moscow-backed Abkhaz leader Aslan Bzhania voted in the Russian State Duma elections on September 19, while Anatoly Bibilov, head of the occupied Tskhinvali / South Ossetia region, voted on September 17.
